Meet Layna Heubel: Benefits Manager at NTI
Layna joined NTI in 2022 and has since become a driving force behind the company's employee benefits and 401(k) programs. Supporting both NTI and Network Connex, she works to create a seamless and positive benefits experience while ensuring compliance and fiscal responsibility. Whether managing enrollments, assisting employees through life changes, or coordinating annual open enrollment, Layna is committed to helping employees maximize the value of their benefits and feel supported every step of the way.
"I also support leave of absence programs and wellness initiatives this includes coordinating processes related to disability, FMLA, and other leave benefits with employees and our venders."
As a Benefits Manager, Layna maintains accurate records and supports audits and reporting requirements. She also partners with our third partner venders to resolve any issues and to analyze utilization, costs, and industry trends.
Layna's Journey to Becoming NTI's Benefits Manager
Before joining NTI, Layna spent 12 years inspiring students as a high school math teacher. Her passion for education is backed by a strong academic foundation, including a bachelor's degree in mathematics with an emphasis in Secondary Education from Northern Illinois University and a master's degree in educational leadership from Aurora University. Today, she brings the same dedication to learning, problem-solving, and leadership to her role at NTI.
"I enjoy being in an industry that is fast paced and ever changing," she says.
What Layna's Typical Workday Looks Like
Layna's typical workday is dynamic and people-focused, balancing employee support, benefits administration, compliance responsibilities, vendor partnerships, and long-term planning initiatives. No two days are exactly alike, as her priorities often shift based on employee needs and the time of year. During busy periods such as open enrollment, she spends more time educating employees, answering questions, and helping team members make informed benefits decisions. At other times, her focus may be on managing benefit programs, coordinating with vendors, ensuring compliance with regulations, and developing strategies to enhance the overall employee experience.
The Best Parts About Being a Benefits Manager
For Layna, one of the most rewarding aspects of her role is helping employees understand their benefits and 401(k) options, empowering them to make informed decisions that can positively impact their financial well-being and future. She enjoys breaking down complex information into clear, meaningful guidance and seeing employees gain confidence in their choices.
Another favorite part of her job is the opportunity to collaborate with teams across the organization. Working with a variety of departments allows her to see firsthand how her work supports employees and contributes to the company's overall success, making her role both fulfilling and impactful.
“I enjoy working with many departments at the company. In my role I have the privilege of doing so and seeing how my role impacts other stakeholders is rewarding,” she says.
Life Beyond the Job
Outside of work, Layna's life revolves around family, adventure, and making the most of every moment. She enjoys getting lost in a good book, exploring new destinations with her family, and spending time outdoors whenever she can. At home, she and her husband, Tyler, stay busy raising their two children, 8-year-old Greysten and 5-year-old Coley, while eagerly preparing to welcome a baby boy later this fall. Whether she's traveling, enjoying nature, or creating memories with her growing family, Layna values the experiences and connections that bring balance and joy to her life.
Fun Fact...
Despite her love for outdoor adventures and an active lifestyle, Layna has never broken a bone, an impressive streak that has remained unbroken through years of travel, family activities, and everyday life.
